Suokukka

Riassunto

Suokukka by Ferenc Herczeg is a novel written in the early 20th century. It appears to be a Budapest-set social drama about János Jurisics, a polished but indebted aristocrat engaged to Adele, daughter of the domineering Professor Mihályi, whose orderly bourgeois world is unsettled by money troubles, class friction, and the allure of a mysterious flower girl named Jessi. The story explores respectability versus desire, gambling and debt, and the hypocrisy threading through both the elite and the aspiring middle class. The opening of the novel introduces a tense household where Professor Mihályi enforces rigid order while Adele’s fiancé, János, arrives late, shrugs off the slight, and then struggles to draw warmth or trust from his wary bride-to-be. Frustrated, he walks into the city’s nightlife with his devoted, lightweight friend Szentgróthy, hears of Jessi—the coveted, untouchable flower seller—and soon meets her himself: first in a fleeting street encounter, then at a café where she pins violets to his lapel. Drawn in, János visits Jessi’s modest yet luxuriously dotted room, learns she is discreetly supported by a far-off prince she has never met, and recognizes the mirror image of his own transactional engagement. As Szentgróthy’s ruinous gambling loss forces János to seek funds from shady brokers, a dubious rescue hinges on involving his elderly father—an option he rejects—leaving the financial crisis and his divided loyalties unresolved at the outset.
