At the start of the narrative, we meet Tullio Dani, who finds himself in a state of turmoil following the tragic loss of his wife, whom he believes he wronged due to his unfounded suspicions of infidelity. As he reflects on his jealousy and the psychological turmoil it caused, he perceives himself as not just a potential murderer in thought but grapples with the idea of being morally guilty for having entertained such dark intentions.
