Emlékeimből

Zusammenfassung

"Emlékeimből" by Mór Jókai is a memoir written in the early 20th century. The book appears to be a collection of personal recollections and cultural observations, focusing particularly on the Hungarian National Theatre and the broader theatrical life of Budapest during the 19th century. Jókai shares firsthand anecdotes, reflections, and character portraits that illuminate the social, artistic, and political climate of the era as seen through his own experiences and the personalities he encountered. The opening of "Emlékeimből" centers on vivid descriptions of the old National Theatre—its architecture, idiosyncratic staff, and the everyday rituals of its actors, musicians, and audience members. Jókai paints detailed pictures of customs surrounding salaries, the mishaps involving early gas lighting, and the colorful cast of both performers and attendees. The narrative then shifts to the turbulent historical period after the Hungarian War of Independence, illustrating how political changes affected the theatre and its people. Through stories about now-forgotten actors, the rise of the national operetta, memorable directors, and even passionate duels among the elite, the memoir offers a rich, sometimes nostalgic, sometimes humorous window into Hungarian cultural life and the ever-changing fortunes of its iconic playhouse.
