The narrative centers around the aspirations of Colin Churchill, a young sculptor who desires to go to Rome to further his artistic education. Throughout the opening chapters, Colin's character is developed alongside Minna Wroe, a supportive and caring figure in his life, who grapples with her feelings of love and concern as Colin prepares to depart. At the start of the book, we find Colin at a crossroads, feeling dissatisfied with his current job at a marble-cutting studio and yearning for the opportunities and artistic growth he believes he can find in Rome.
